Oil Change in Waverly, IA at Dale Howard Waverly

Oil lubricates the engine and its controls to keep it running smoothly. Changing your oil regularly is one of the easiest ways to maintain your vehicle.

Why an Oil Change is Important

Why an Oil Change is Important | Dale Howard Auto Center of Waverly in Waverly IA

Your vehicle is made up of many components, the engine especially. When in motion, these engine parts rub together, causing friction. Oil lubricates these parts so that there is less friction, resulting in less wear and tear on your vehicle. Over time, the oil breaks down and cannot disintegrate all of the debris that gets inside your engine from driving.

When this happens, friction between engine parts rises and more debris and other particles can get trapped in your engine, resulting in your vehicle overworking itself. This can lead to overheating, lower fuel efficiency, and problems with your engine performance. Postponing an oil change can result in more costly problems in the future, so it’s better to get regular oil changes to keep your car working at its best and save you time and money.

When You Should Get an Oil Change

The telltale signs that it’s time for an oil change include knocking sounds coming from your engine, dirty or grimy oil, or a burning smell. Your dashboard may have a warning light or the ‘check engine’ light may come on.

There are different types of oil for different vehicles, so maintenance depends on which oil you need. Manufacturers typically recommend:

  • Synthetic oil: every 6 months or 6,000 miles
  • Semi-synthetic oil: every 5 months or 5,000 miles
  • Conventional oil: every 3 months or 3,000 miles

The Oil Change Process

Step 1

Our certified technicians will first unscrew the drain plug and let the oil drain; this will take about 5 minutes.

Step 2

Next, they’ll remove the old oil filter and gasket and let any remaining oil drain from it.

Step 3

Next, they’ll replace the drain plug and install a new filter, screwing them tightly enough so that a seal prevents any new oil from spilling.

Step 4

Lastly, they’ll fill the engine with fresh oil, wait a few minutes to let it settle, and then check the oil levels to be sure enough has been poured. Before handing your keys back to you, they’ll start up the car and let it sit idle for a few minutes to check for leaks.

Cost of an Oil Change

The cost of an oil change will depend on what type of oil you need. Most oil changes range from $35 to $125. Dale Howard Waverly always has parts specials running, so be sure to check them out to get the best deal on your oil change.

Questions to Ask Your Service Technician

  • What kind of oil does my car take?
  • How often should I change the oil?
  • How can I check the oil levels myself?

Signs of a Quality Oil Change

A quality oil change means the right kind of oil was used for your car, all parts were properly replaced, and your vehicle runs smoothly with no leaks. If you notice anything unusual after an oil change, such as the ‘check engine’ light, leaks, or low oil levels, don’t hesitate to bring your car in for service.

Caring for Your Vehicle After an Oil Change

  • Keep in mind the date/mileage of your next oil change; this will usually be on a sticker placed on your windshield to help you remember
  • Check the oil levels, color, and consistency every few weeks with a dipstick
